The painter Carl-Heinz Kliemann (1924–2016) is one of Berlin’s most important postwar painters. Two years after his death, the Kunsthaus Dahlem, in cooperation with the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin and the Carl-Heinz und Helga Kliemann Stiftung, is dedicating an exhibition to the artist’s work from 1945 to 1960. In addition to Berlin cityscapes, landscapes are one theme that occupied the artist all his life and on which the exhibition at the Kunsthaus will concentrate. As a student of the Brücke painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, he was deeply committed to the latter’s style, especially in his woodcuts, whereas in his painting he quickly developed his own personal style. With fifty graphic works and painting, the exhibition presents this early work.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog with a foreword by Paul Spies and Dominik Bartmann and essays by Helmut Börsch-Supan, Jennifer McComas, and Dorothea Schöne.
