Emilio Vedova – More Than Movement for Its Own Sake

In 1963–1965, eighteen months were spent by the Italian artist Emilio Vedova in Berlin as a fellow of the American Ford Foundation and upon the recommendation of Werner Haftmann. During this time, he engaged intensively with the country’s recent history and created numerous works that directly responded to this context. These included both a critical examination of the Nazi era and fascism, as well as a homage to the Dadaists. Throughout his stay, Vedova was aware that he was working in the former studio of sculptor Arno Breker (now Kunsthaus Dahlem), which had been built specifically for the regime’s propaganda purposes.
The exhibition is dedicated to the artist’s one-and-a-half-year stay and, for the first time in decades, presents an overview of the works created at this very location.
