    Impressive Dimensions

A workshop on the architecture and history of the Kunsthaus Dahlem

The Kunsthaus Dahlem and its surroundings will be explored in a tour – with the body, by drawing and in conversation. Why is everything so big in the Kunsthaus? How does it look from the outside? How do the rooms feel? The students’ own experiences provide the starting point for a conversation about the architecture and history of the building as the former state studio of Arno Breker, Adolf Hitler’s favorite sculptor. After a discussion, the students draw and collage their personal ideas for a use of the building.

    Censorship and art

About the freedom of art. We draw boundaries to break through them together!

When is art free and who actually decides when something can be shown with the label “art” and when not? What role do artists play in society and how can they protect themselves from censorship? We will explore these questions together in this workshop. In the process, we will also ask ourselves how critically we, as viewers, actually react to the works we encounter at Kunsthaus Dahlem. In the exhibition we will actively decide what we would censor or accept. Drawing and with the help of our own smartphone camera, we will compile the newly gained impressions into a possible exhibition. Will the decisions made surprise us in the end? Let’s get involved in the experiment!

    Language and art

The word as a political instrument: we listen and speak, collect and deconstruct.

“Furchtbar sind Not und Elend über unser Volk gekommen,” “Millionen fleißige Menschen verdammen die Arbeitsnotgang zum Müßiggang,” and “Wiederaufstieg des deutschen Volkes” are just a few of the building blocks of Hitler’s speech at the laying of the cornerstone of the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich (1933). Through simple but purposefully chosen slogans, the worldview of the National Socialists was and is conveyed to the population just like any other (extreme) political ideas. It is the choice of words that tries to influence the recipients through its manipulative power. The spoken and written word thus becomes an important political instrument. On the basis of concrete contemporary testimonies we enter into a common dialogue and examine first the choice of words and then the grammar of the selected texts. We will analyze the timbre of the (Nazi) language resulting from these factors as well as its symbolism. With a few practical interventions we will dissect texts or speeches into their components and lead the written word ad absurdum in order to subsequently create new contexts of meaning.

    Morality and art

Art wants to be questioned. A self-experiment

The question of morality in art is timeless and is still passionately discussed today. In many cases, artists have seen and still see themselves as taboo breakers who try to expose grievances with artistic means. But according to which extra-artistic evaluations can art be talked about? And when it comes to art from the Nazi era, in which artistic freedom was restricted to a narrow framework, do other criteria apply? Together we will consider how to deal with this topic and the works of artists from that time. Is there art that should not or should not be shown in a museum context? Who decides on this? And what do various opponents and supporters of a museum presentation of Nazi art have to say? In this workshop we dare to experiment and slip into the role of a curator. In doing so, we will also ask ourselves about the responsibility of a historically influenced exhibition venue such as the Kunsthaus Dahlem.
