BIRDING THE FUTURE – Audiovisual installation by Krista Caballero and Frank Ekeberg

    2013 – ongoing, 8-channel sound, stereoscopic cards

    Includes materials in English

Part of the festival programme 10 YEARS – 10 DAYS! to mark the 10th anniversary of Kunsthaus Dahlem

    About the Project

Birding the Future is an interdisciplinary artwork by Krista Caballero and Frank Ekeberg. First initiated in the United States in 2013, it explores current extinction rates by specifically focusing on the warning abilities of birds as bioindicators of environmental change. The installation invites visitors to listen to endangered and extinct bird calls and to view visionary avian landscapes through stereographs.

The presentation at Kunsthaus Dahlem features an eight-channel immersive sound installation composed of bird calls from species currently endangered in Germany and extinct globally, highlighting the broader national and international ecological context. The stereoscopic cards present three-dimensional imagery from all iterations of the project developed to date, including region-specific series from Queensland, Australia; the Arabian Peninsula; Norway; the Mid-Atlantic USA; the Rhein-Main area in Germany; the Barrow Valley in Ireland; and the Sky Islands in Arizona, USA, as well as two unique series focused on bird-naming practices and conventions. On the reverse side of each card, visitors will find a range of content – from scientific research and data on threats to local bird populations, such as pesticides, agriculture, and habitat destruction, to poetry, folklore, and regional stories related to birds.

The project is grounded in extensive collaboration with scientists and scientific institutions, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, USA, the bird archive at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and the Senckenberg Natural History Museum Frankfurt.

Birding the Future is not only a visual and auditory experience but also an invitation to reflect on our relationship with nature, the role of birds in our ecosystems, and the futures we are shaping.
