About the Project
Dokumentale is a Berlin festival for documentary formats that promotes films, new media, non-fiction books and podcasts. It creates an interdisciplinary platform for exchange between filmmakers, journalists, authors, artists, scientists and the audience.
Two evenings of Dokumentale’25 at Kunsthaus Dahlem – on 18 and 19 June – will take place in the unique D’Lounge format, which combines thought-provoking documentaries with music, extraordinary locations, and a club atmosphere. Dokumentale presents carefully curated films in unusual spaces – from nightclubs to urban off-locations – accompanied by live DJ sets, great food, and the magic of the unexpected. Documentaries reflect our reality, and at D’Lounge, we can face it together. Events where film, music, and venues merge into one immersive experience. Intense, surprising, and real.

In a moss-covered mountain village, an Indigenous Tzotzil family preserves their cultural identity by herding sheep. The filmmaker, who has deep connections to this land, revisits an old photograph that sparks reflection. As she explores her ties to the territory, she confronts themes of identity, transformation, and nature. Through intimate conversations, archival imagery, and personal experiences, the film delves into the powerful bond between land and belonging, questioning how our sense of place shapes the way we see the world.
A powerful invitation to question our understanding of belonging.
Gabriela Domínguez Ruvalcaba – Biography
Gabriela Domínguez Ruvalcaba is a documentary filmmaker born in Chiapas. She has a Masterʼs in Creative Documentary from Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Her work weaves an anthropological perspective with a personal film essay by using found footage and dances for the screen, searching for a creative and expanded use of audiovisual language. Her debut feature, La Danza del Hipocampo, won several prestigious awards, including Best Documentary at the Monterrey International Film Festival and a Jury Mention at Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM Morelia). Ways to Traverse a Territory, her second feature, premiered at Locarno IFF and FICUNAM 2024, continuing her exploration of cultural preservation and the human connection to the natural world.
Sarah Schurian: raumkörper
Performance with dancers
A socio-political dance performance that reflects the concept of taking up space. External limitations manipulate the dancersʼ movements, giving them space or taking away their space. These manipulations represent the social norm and are brought to life through space limitations on the ground and specially designed clothes with attached ties, which allow to limit and free up the dancersʼ movements. This is intended to clearly convey that the concept of space in society is not a given.
Sarah Schurian – Biography
Sarah Schurian, born in Austria, completed a bachelorʼs degree in Non-Profit Management and has since mainly worked on projects that combine art and activism. Her strong commitment to nature and society has always shaped her work. She is currently pursuing a masterʼs degree at the Berlin University of the Arts, focusing on the artistic visualization of subversive themes, with textiles at the centre.
