When Politics Strategised Aesthetics – Works from the National Museum of Modern Art Zagreb 1945–1960

About the tour

In this public tour, art educators provide insights into the exhibition. Using representative works from the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, the artistic transformations in former Yugoslavia under Tito between 1945 and 1960 are traced, which led to the coexistence of state-aligned, figurative art and free, abstract forms of expression. The focus is on artists who sought their own forms of expression between political control and artistic freedom.

The educators moderate the tour from different perspectives, using the artworks and exhibits as a starting point for a shared discussion with visitors.

With Karen Michelsen Castañón (artist, art educator)

► Karen Michelsen Castañón is a visual artist, filmmaker and art educator. Her work explores the ways in which (colonial) histories are told and includes short films and textiles. She questions how both hegemonic and invisible stories are re-enacted in our everyday lives, and how this relates to current events. To what extent does critical historical knowledge stir our (artistic) actions in the present? She is also co-founder of mitkollektiv, an intersectional arts education collective, and of the art education project Reimagine Jetzt!
